Federal Government of Somalia’s Weekly Briefing Mogadishu, Friday, 17th October, 2025

 

1- President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud attended in Nairobi a national funeral service held in honor of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who recently passed away.
2- President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud chaired the weekly meeting of the Cabinet, which focused on accelerating state formation plans and improving public services.

3- President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud made a brief visit to Addis Ababa and held talks with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, discussing bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

4- President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud sent a congratulatory message to the Somali people on the 71st anniversary of Somali Flag Day, urging the public to strengthen national unity.

5- President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud congratulated the Federal Parliament of Somalia for the smooth completion of the election of Somalia’s representatives to the East African Community (EAC) Parliament.

6- Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre extended congratulations to all Somalis on the observance of National Flag Day.

7- Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre hosted the Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Somalia, Dr. Abdullah Bin Salem Al Nuaimi, and they discussed strengthening the historical ties and strategic cooperation between the two countries.

8- Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre appointed new Directors General for the Ministries of Public Works and for Communications and Technology.

9- Minister of Health and Human Services Dr. Ali Haji Adan participated in the 72nd World Health Organization (WHO) conference of the Eastern Mediterranean region, held in Cairo, Egypt.

10- Minister of Planning, Investment and Economic Development Mohamed Abdirahman Sheikh Farah participated in the Africa Ministers’ Conference on Planning, Economic Development and Finance, addressing reform of the global financial system.

11- Mogadishu’s Mayor and Governor of Banadir Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Mungab) hosted a ceremonial dinner for the Speaker of the Parliament of the North-East Federal Member State, Adan Abdullahi Aw Hassan, who is currently visiting Mogadishu.

12- Finance Minister Bihi Iman Ige met in Washington, D.C. with IMF, World Bank, and Arab Development Fund leaders, focusing on economic development and financial reform for Somalia.

13- Deputy Minister of Public Works and Housing Elmi Mohamud Nur met with the Acting Head of the Qatar-based Financial Development Fund.

14- The Federal Parliament has elected Somalia’s Representatives to the East African Community (EAC) Parliament for the 2022–2027 term.

15- Somali Parliament has approved the newly established Independent Human Rights Commission.

16- Minister of Women and Human Rights Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzumi met in Doha with the Chairperson of the Qatar Government’s Human Rights Committee, Mrs. Maryam bint Abdullah Al-Attiyah.

17- Minister of Communications and Technology Mohamed Adan Moalim hosted UNOPS-Somalia Director Ala’a Nemer.

18- The Deputy Minister of Defense Omar Ali Abdi met with the EU Ambassador to Somalia, Mrs. Francesca Di Mauro, and with a high-level delegation from the European Peace Facility (EPF).

19- Deputy Minister of Planning, Investment and Economic Development Mohamed Aden Mohamed hosted the head of the Danish Refugee Council-Somalia, Filip Lozinski.

20- Minister of Women and Development of Human Rights Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzumi held an official meeting in Doha with the Qatari Minister of Women, Buthaina Bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi.

21- Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Hassan Moalim Mohamyd met in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with the Attorney General of Azerbaijan.

22- The President of HirShabelle State, Ali Abdullahi Hussein, chaired a security-focused meeting attended by police, the armed forces, and the national security agency.

23- A planned operation in the Mabaax area of Hiiraan region led to the killing of a senior Kharijites Al Shabab terrorist leader named Ali Ahmed Gure aka Ali Qoyane, who was in charge of the group’s intelligence unit in Beledweyne.

24- Banadir Regional Governor and Mogadishu Mayor Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Mungab) met with the European Union Ambassador to Somalia, Francesca Di Mauro.

25- The Ministry of Communications & Technology, in cooperation with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), launched national consultation, a two-day event on Somalia’s Digital Transformation Strategy (2025-2030).

26- Somalia has officially launched its new justice system aimed at enhancing efficiency, transparency, and accountability across the justice sector.

27- Banadir Regional Governor and Mogadishu Mayor Dr.Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Mungab) inaugurated the rehabilitation of Waxaracade Primary, Middle, and Secondary School after its reconstruction following the country’s devastation in 1991.

28- The Federal Government of Somalia and the Republic of Azerbaijan signed an agreement to remove visa requirements for diplomatic passport holders between the two countries.

29- The Commander of the Land Forces of the Somali National Army, Brigadier General Sahal Abdullahi Omar, inspected Awdheegle district in Lower Shabelle, where Kharijites Al Shabab militants had recently been defeated.
